The Hanging Garden
Lead Designer & Maker

The Hanging Garden is an installation experiment with vertical food growing in partnership with Colindale Community Garden. Using the central spine of a commercial-grade polytunnel, plant pots are suspended with a climbing rope and bamboo hanging system. Tomatoes and chilli seedlings are transplanted through the bottom openings to be grown upside-down while agretti is planted upwards and sharing the same soil mass. The hanging garden provides shading in the summer with the upper layer of agretti positioned to tolerate intense heat. A spectrum of colour is achieved by mixing primary paint colours to give an artistic and uplifting quality to the community space.

Colindale Community Garden is an initiative to provide year round fresh produce for Colindale Food Bank and offer volunteering and well-being opportunities. It brings people together through growing, harvesting and sharing food. It also supports local food resilience and develops other community food growing initiatives across London Borough of Barnet, through offering free plants and horticultural guidance.
